About Breakfast

I’m not going to lie—
About this one either—
I woke up for breakfast.
I walked down that street for breakfast.

And I’ll contend—
It’s all a booby hatch.
Some are motivated by food—
Others are motivated by wealth—

We’re all selfish.
I wasn’t Good Samaritan.
Honestly— I just wanted breakfast
And there was an obstacle.

This is my worst guilt—
Doubting intuition to avoid the unknown
It’s not tangible or factual— though
We’re all helpless— till there’s help

So— you want to know
What nobody ever talks about
A Samaritan’s thoughts
Upon approach—

Should I stay or go
He is standing
Leaning peculiar
Everyone else is walking

He’s still standing
Not moving
Nobody else is stopping
No baristas even opening the door…?

My thoughts— “is this real?”
And I said to myself,
“Fine! I’ll balls it!”
I still took my time walking over—

Cautiously watching—
Wanting the situation to change
He said, “I can’t open the door”
His words echoed in my mind—

I can’t open the door—
I can’t open the door—
That’s all he said.
I said a hearty Deep South, “I got you!”

So, I flung the door open—
He said, “you’re not from here”
I said, “I evacuated Katrina.”
What he said was more than a reckoning—

He had a stroke—
While watching the news—
From his hotel room—
Abroad on business—

His office was in the first tower—
He had a stroke seeing 9/11 on the news—
He had a stroke realizing the loss—
He knew the pain— many didn’t get out—

I was stunned even though I knew—
And all I could say was,
“Well— I guess we’ll have breakfast
In honor of survivor’s guilt.”

I couldn’t believe I said that—
As I ordered breakfast—
My internal dialogue was—
Ashamed— I felt every bit

Of the depth of emotions
In his response, “huh— yeah…”
I should have never hesitated to help
And I am glad that I did——

Open the door for breakfast.
