XI. JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS
Digital Collage, Jean-Marie Lee, 2017

Why I made this collage.

While making the Stations of the Cross images
I was looking at how other artists portrayed
the story of the Holy Cross. Some of the crucifix
images seemed too glamorous or stylized or
just not raw enough for the situation. I don’t
fully understand how religion became sugar
coated; however, if you read the Bible the truth
is very grim. There is a lot of sorrow in life. So,
I definitely went with— in my opinion— the
most vile moment in Mel Gibbons’ THE PASSION.
The moment where Jesus is nailed to the cross
and hoisted vertically. Still— I remember wanting
to vomit after seeing this moment in the film
because that honestly has to be “the worst.”
So, I took a still shot of that moment and
tried to symbolically portray the dizziness,
terror, and pain of the Pascal Mystery— in one
meditative moment for the viewer to feel. Too often—
art becomes likable decoration. And I can tell you
art is more often than not an emotional expression,
story, and protest for the viewer to become
engaged in.

JML-PLOGS poetic commentary is below

Holy Cross

A black brick path was laid
And I did look back— but
Not by turning my head

I have to keep going
Discerning by reflection
Making way through faith

It was never about emotions
It’s a vocation and commitment
To actualize this life

Don’t miss me— I’m still here
Like bricks laid out to hold position
Our beds are made and we must

Grateful without wailing
Walk steadily carrying
Our Holy Cross

XOXO! JML

XI. JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS

V. We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,
R. Because by your holy Cross you have
redeemed the world.

Now they are crucifying Our Lord, and with him two
thieves, one on his right and one on his left. Mean
while, Jesus says: ‘Father, forgive them, for they do
not know what they are doing.’ It is Love that has
brought Jesus to Calvary. And once on the Cross,
all his gestures and all his words are of love, a love
both calm and strong. With a gesture befitting
an Eternal Priest, he opens his arms to the whole
human race... And we, our souls rent with sorrow,
say to Jesus sincerely: ‘I am yours, and I give
my whole self to You; gladly do I nail myself to
your Cross, ready to be in the cross-roads of
this world a soul dedicated to You, to your glory,
to the work of Redemption, the co-redemption
of all mankind.’

Our Father... Hail Mary...
V. Have mercy on us, O Lord
R. Have mercy on us.
