HAPPY SAINT JOSEPH’S DAY

Dear God and Saint Joseph,
Please forgive me of my sins and
please instill a concrete solution to
remedy the imbalance of male and
female leaders in the Catholic
Church world wide and in the Vatican.
Thank You for Your continued
blessings and support. Amen

My biological father died while my mother
was pregnant with me. My parents were
married, educated, and employed adults.
Growing up in a single parent house hold,
even as a middle class white girl, I still faced
questions from my peers and community as
to — “where is your father?” This question
implies an overtone of drama like inquiring if
my parents were divorced, or is your dad a
dead beat?, or do you have food in
your house?, or who pays the bills?

Nowadays, if someone pries into my personal
family life— I’m less defensive about saying,
“my father is deceased.” It’s still weird because
I didn’t know him as a regular dad that would do
family things. I only know my father in spirit. Many
people worldwide face the single parent scenario
daily and could probably add to the colorful array
of questions they’ve been asked.

For me, when I look at Saint Joseph, I know he
matters greatly to the Holy Family. If it weren’t
for Saint Joseph— how would Jesus have
known what it means to have a father? Babies are
taught from day one who their parents are and
society expects there to be a man and woman
present in the house hold. The male/female
parenting dynamic is evolving to be inclusive
of situations that aren’t primarily the norm—
but it’s the social culture of expectations that
divides differences.

I know God is the Big Dad in charge but
because of Saint Joseph— I know that I
too have biological father of my own. One that I
know from family photos that don’t necessarily
have me present due to circumstances. So,
one may have an “ah ha” moment thinking—
“OMG? What about all the kids growing up without a
mother present? OMG!! What if the mother died in
child birth!” And I’ll say yes! You’re on the right track.
But it’s bigger than just the mother being present.

(Yes— sometimes I do give God a
shout out on how confused I was as a
child about parental roles.)

I’m referring to a mother as the head of house
hold receiving equal pay in the workplace to
provide for her kids. I’ve heard that cliche that
“all widows should remarry.” And I’ll just say that
you don’t know my mother. Marriage is a sacred
bond and commitment between two people to love
and cherish each other all the days of their lives
and hopefully provide a better future as a family.
You are never forced by God to marry anyone
for any reason. The Virgin Mary wasn’t forced
to marry Saint Joseph. God didn’t even force
the Virgin Mary to have His Son Jesus.

Call me crazy but males have a bigger role in
family than just provider. Women like wise
have a bigger role in family than caretaker.
Thus, I am also calling the Catholic Church to
allow women to be priests because both men
and women are providers as well as caretakers.

XOXO! JML
