Soup Kitchens

Illustrating-- survival

A soup kitchen is similar to a restaurant
minus the bill for the meal to the person(s)
eating. Typically soup kitchens obtain food
from local food banks and volunteers. Often
these kitchens are run by churches.

While I was researching this project, I was
confronted with questions regarding sanitation
and concerns of exposing children to
homelessness. From my experience, established
soup kitchens that operate as tax exempt charities
are required to follow the same sanitation guidelines
as a typical restaurant.

Many soup kitchens have sections for families to
sit together. And all of the soup kitchens I visited
maintained security and codes of conduct for
the facility.

From a sociological perspective the existence
of soup kitchens is innate to human moral
obligation of feeding the hungry which is an
aspect of civilized society as well as primitive
